A Hawaiian band was formed in 1995 by friends, Kuana Torres Kahele and Kapulanakehau Tamure in their hometown of Hilo, Hawai'i. The two were known for their musical talents from an early age. They added bassist and fellow falsetto singer, Keao Costa who helped to solidify the distinctive sound known today as Na Palapalai. Makani 'Olu'olu, the group's 2003 debut album was applauded by critics and fans alike. At the time, their music was like none other and helped to catapult the band to meteoric success in Hawaii and Japan. They continued to receive global praise for their ability to revive traditional songs with fresh arrangements that transcended generations. The group followed with two more acclaimed releases: Ke'Ala Beauty and Ka Pua Hae Hawai'i. All three albums have become veritable soundtracks for halau dancing hula worldwide. Valued for their original compositions and heavenly falsetto harmonies, the band has made a significant contribution to the legacy that is Hawaiian music.
At a 25 year milestone marker, Na Palapalai is still at the forefront of Hawaiian music, pioneers and innovators of their craft. They continue as the preeminent, hula band of choice for thousands of hula halau around the world.They are celebrating with a double disc CD containing almost two dozen new songs. BACK to the PATCH is available from the band and as a fundraiser for hula groups.
