Roger Federer defeated Andy Murray in the final, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4, to win the Gentlemen's Singles tennis title at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships.[1] It was his seventh Wimbledon title and seventeenth Grand Slam title.[2] With the win, Federer also regained the world No. 1 ranking.[3][4] Federer thus equalled both William Renshaw and Pete Sampras' record of seven Wimbledon titles, as well as Sampras' record of 286 weeks as world No. 1; Federer broke the latter record on 16 July 2012.

Novak Djokovic was the defending champion, but lost in the semifinals to Federer.

In reaching the final, Andy Murray became the first British man to make it to the final since Don Budge defeated Bunny Austin in 1938. The championships was also notable for one of the biggest upsets in recent years as World No. 100 Luká? Rosol beat World No. 2 and two-time Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal in the second round, 6-7(9-11), 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, ending a streak of 11 major quarterfinals. The loss ended Nadal's season as he did not play tennis again until February 2013 at the Chile Open.

This was the last Grand Slam tournament for 2002 Wimbledon Finalist and former World No. 3 David Nalbandian, 2003 French Open Champion and former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero, former Top 15 player Juan Ignacio Chela and last Wimbledon appearance for three-time Finalist and former World No. 1 Andy Roddick.
