H?i Dng (About this soundlisten) is a city in Vietnam. It is the capital of H?i Dng, a highly industrialized province in the Hanoi Capital Region and the Red River Delta in Northern Vietnam. Its name is Sino-Vietnamese for "ocean sun" (??). The city is at the midpoint between the capital Hanoi and major port Haiphong, and is part of the Northern Key Economic Zone. In 2019, Hai Duong city had a population of 507,469.[1]

Name

The name first appeared officially in 1498.[2] In feudal times, H?i Dng indicated a vast area from east of Hanoi to the sea. This area corresponds to all of modern H?i Dng, Haiphong, most of H?ng Yên and the southwestern corner of Qu?ng Ninh. Hai Duong is homecity of Phuc Tran.

H?i Dng city is in the middle of this historical area and was the location of a citadel defending the capital. Because of this historical location, Thành ?ông (eastern citadel) is a common nickname of H?i Dng.

Geography

Hai Duong city is bordered to the north-east by the Nam Sách District and Thanh Hà District. A branch of the Cái River (literally, "mother river" in Vietnamese) divides the city into two parts, on one side the urban area, on the other side lie rural and industrial outskirts. It is bordered to the west by the C?m Giàng District, and to the south by the Gia L?c and T? K? districts, and also a branch of the Sat River. The city is located in the centre of both the Northern Economic Area and of the Hanoi-Hai Phong-Quang Ninh development region as well. H?i Dng is located 58 kilometres (36 mi) from Hanoi, 45 kilometres (28 mi) from Hai Phong, and 80 kilometres (50 mi) from Halong Bay. A railway, National Highway No.5 (Hanoi - H?i Dng - Hai Phong) and National Highway No.18 (B?c Ninh - H?i Dng - Qu?ng Ninh) all pass through the province.

H?i Dng Province is also located within the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam. It is bordered by Hai Phong, Qu?ng Ninh Province in the east, H?ng Yên in the west, B?c Ninh and B?c Giang in the north, and Thái Bình in the south. With a total area of 1,648 square kilometres (636 sq mi), H?i Dng Province has one major city (H?i Dng) and eleven districts (Bình Giang, C?m Giàng, Chí Linh, Gia L?c, Kim Thành, Thanh Hà, Thanh Mi?n, Nam Sách, Kinh Môn, Ninh Giang, T? K?).

Nowadays, highway makes it easier to commute among Hai phong, Hai Duong and Hanoi, approximately from Hai Duong to Hanoi, it takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour since Oct 2017.

H?i Dng city was built in 1804, and was first called "Thành ?ông" (Sino-Vietnamese for eastern citadel), referring to the citadel east of Vietnam's capital, Hanoi. During the French colonial period, H?i Dng was a town. Before 1968, H?i Dng was a town in the H?i Dng Province. Between 1968 and 1996 it was the capital town of H?i H?ng Province, after the provinces of H?i Dng and H?ng Yên merged to form H?i H?ng. On November 6, 1996, following the separation of H?i Dng and H?ng Yên provinces, H?i Dng became the capital town of the H?i Dng province as it had been before. On August 6, 1997, H?i Dng was established as a city.

From 2013, H?i Dng city includes 17 wards (urban areas) and 4 communes (rural areas).[3]
