Jordan Terrell Carter (born September 13, 1996), known professionally as Playboi Carti, is an American rapper, songwriter and model from Atlanta, Georgia. A former member of underground Atlanta label Awful Records, he is currently signed to ASAP Rocky's AWGE and Interscope Records.[1] His eponymous debut mixtape was released on April 14, 2017.[2][3]

Early life

Jordan Terrell Carter was born in Atlanta, and grew up in Fairburn, Georgia. He attended Creekside High School (Fairburn, Georgia), and eventually transferred over to North Springs Charter High School in Sandy Springs.[4] Carter skipped high school classes regularly to work on his music or go to his job at H&M.[5]

Although he is mostly spotted in only luxurious clothing, Carti shared with Liana Satenstein of Vogue that, as a kid growing up, he had always been shopping in thrift stores, something that has had an effect on his fashion and music style.[6]

Career

Carti began rapping at an early age under the name Sir Cartier. Much of his early work has been deleted from the internet. He adopted the name Playboi Carti in 2012 and signed to rapper Father's underground label Awful Records.[7] He began to attract attention in 2015 with his singles "Broke Boi" and "Fetti" featuring Da$h and Maxo Kream, both of which were published to Soundcloud.[8]

After falling out with Father, Carti signed to A$AP Mob's label AWGE. In 2016, he was featured on their single "Telephone Calls" from the album Cozy Tapes Vol. 1: Friends.[5]

Carti released his eponymous debut mixtape in April 2017.[9] The release gained attention from various music publications, including XXL,[2]Pitchfork,[10]Spin,[3]HotNewHipHop,[11] and PopMatters,[12] and reached #12 in the Billboard 200.[13] The mixtape spawned two successful singles, "Magnolia", which reached #29 in the Billboard Hot 100[13] and "Woke Up Like This" featuring Lil Uzi Vert, which reached #76[13]. Accompanying the mixtape's release, Carti embarked on a tour with Gucci Mane and Dreezy.[14] On June 13, 2017, Playboi Carti was named as one of the ten of XXL's "2017 Freshman Class."[15] Around this time, he was featured on A$AP Mob's single "Raf" from their album Cozy Tapes Vol. 2: Too Cozy and Lana del Rey's single "Summer Bummer" from her album Lust For Life. Most recently, Carti and Lil Uzi Vert have teased a collaborative mixtape.[16]

Modeling

Carter's fashion style is one of the main features of his public image. GQ has defined Carter as the "leader of a youth style," and said that he represents a stylistic midpoint between the "fashion gloss of A$AP Mob, the punk-rock attitude of Uzi Vert, and the playful camp of Yachty."[17]

Carter's favorite brands include RAF Simons and Balmain. Carter met Simons at a fashion show in New York.[18] Carter is featured on the song "RAF" by ASAP Mob, which was dedicated to the RAF Simons brand. The music video for the song included Carter, ASAP Rocky, and Quavo wearing rare RAF Simons clothing.[19] Carter considers Kanye West and ASAP Rocky inspirations for his fashion style.[20]

Carter has modeled numerous times, including for Kanye West's Yeezy Season 5,[21][22] VFiles,[23][24] and Drake's OVO Lookbook, alongside Ian Connor and John Ross.[25]

Musical style

Carter has been described as a "mumble rapper,"[26] and his music as "playful, hard-hitting, and very melodic."[27]Complex called his style of rapping "spare and repetitive, more concerned with flow and catchy phrases."[28] Briana Younger at Pitchfork said that "Carti's music is less about lyricism and more about atmosphere," going on to say that "whatever Carti lacks in substance he makes up in sheer audacity."[29] Carter's music is influenced by Southern rappers such as Gucci Mane, Young Thug, and Lil Wayne.[26]

The New York Times said Carti's rapping made it appear as if he was "more at ease with the performance of the role than with the actual act of rapping."[30]

Personal life

Carter currently lives and works in and around Los Angeles.[5]

In October, 2017, Carti began dating American model, entrepreneur, and TV Personality, Blac Chyna.[31]

Legal issues

In July 2017, Carter was arrested on domestic abuse charges after arguing with his girlfriend outside of the Los Angeles International Airport and then grabbing her by her backpack and pulling her out of the terminal.[32] In August 2017, it was announced that Carter would not face domestic abuse charges.[33]
