United States Presidential Election in West Virginia, 2000
The 2000 United States presidential election in West Virginia took place on November 7, 2000, and was part of the 2000 United States presidential election. Voters chose 5 representatives, or electors to the Electoral College, who voted for president and vice president.
While West Virginia was traditionally a Democratic stronghold, due to the large coal industry in the state, Gore was seen as an environmental extremist.[1]
West Virginia gave its 5 electoral votes to Governor George W. Bush, the first time a Republican had carried this state since Ronald Reagan in 1984 and only the fourth time since 1932. Bush shockingly carried the state by a margin of 6.3% due to the state being considered a Democratic stronghold ever since the 1932 United States presidential election, This was a huge swing from 1996 when the state was carried by Bill Clinton by a 14.75% Margin. The main reason that contributed to Bush's comfortable 6.3% victory was Al Gore's support for regulation. Bush's opposition to coal regulation resonated with many coal miners in the state.[2] As of the 2020 presidential election[update], this is the last election in which the Democratic candidate won Kanawha County, Harrison County, Lincoln County, and Wyoming County. This was the first time since 1928 that a non-incumbent Republican won West Virginia. From 1932 through 1996 West Virginia had voted Democratic every time except for 1956, 1972, and 1984. It would also be the last time any candidate won the state by a single-digit margin.
