Just wanted to say a massive thanks for your work on the Election results template. Not only is it a big help for getting some consistency in presentation, but the automatic totalling and percentage calculation has helped identify several errors in the tables (both from editors mistranscribing numbers from sources, and mistakes in the sources themselves) by comparing the automatically-calculated totals/percentages with those given in the original tables/sources. This will be a big help in maintaining accuracy! Number 57 22:32, 8 September 2020 (UTC)

Nomination for deletion of Template:Location map Kingdom of Hungary

From my talk page back in september.

Bugger bugger bugger, I saw a map in the transport museum in budapest we went the other week and it had the lat and long but in pretty much a mercator projection. My missus was more interested with the toy trains so I didn't get a chance to take the measures off it. If it's wrong (as it is) it should be deleted but I am still trying to get the measures right. The thing is it's specifically Kingdom of Hungary, but the more atlases (atli? :) I look at the more different lats and longs I get. And anything one does on Hungarian articles is rather contentious, so it is probably really better deleted. Because people whose great grandfathers were part of the Kingdom of Hungary will say no that's Croatia or Slovakia or Slovenia or Yugoslavia or Jugoslavia or The People's Republic of East Kebab. Since Hungarian politics is very contentious and goes on racist grounds in far more than would be allowed in where I come from, this is better off deleted. (Hint: say Treaty of Trianon to a Hungarian and await results.) Si Trew (talk) 09:36, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

Hungary ethic groups.jpg
I never did get round to this. I took the coords off of file at right, which is very high quality but seems to have an odd idea of where 0 longitude is (it suggests it is east of Paris, but that didn't seem to work). As you suggested, I tried to take well-known points at the edges of the map: Fiume, for example, at south-west. I took very good readings after printing out this map at A0 size and using ruler and compass, my trig is quite good, but I could never get it to fit. Si Trew (talk) 06:02, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
.Oh, Template:Location_map_Kingdom_of_Hungary/test might help you. You see, Fiume's in the right place but Budapest is a bit too far left and the rest are well out. Si Trew (talk) 06:09, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
That map uses the Paris meridian. It's not a Mercator projection, the lines of latitude aren't quite parallel. Maproom (talk) 20:09, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
Maproom, thanks for the tip. I have written code for generating coefficients for nonlinear projections if I know the functional form. but, the code requires at least as many reference points as there are coefficients. basically a nonlinear least-squares algorithm. the problem here is that other than the reference markings on the side of the map, it's tough to get reference points in the middle. Frietjes (talk) 21:18, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
Si Trew, should we just give up on Template:Location map Kingdom of Hungary and have it deleted? Frietjes (talk) 21:20, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
How many do you need in the middle? You get get a reference point near each corner by specifying where the nearest line of (Paris) longitude would cross the nearest line of latitude, and use towns like Szolnok (which Google Earth says is 47°10'N 20°11'E Greenwich) in the middle. Maproom (talk) 21:37, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
Maproom, now that I look at it again, I think we have enough with the two interior intersection points and the points along the edges. the original question was about the image in Template:Location map Kingdom of Hungary which is less clear. for File:Hungary-ethnic_groups.jpg, I think we can make a working location map. thank you again. Frietjes (talk) 21:42, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
Just a thought, maybe not very coherent at this time of night. Using an ethnographic map as a location map may, as Si Trew pointed out, be contentious. Will it help if instead I upload to Commons this map? It uses a Ferro meridian, which is no worse than Paris, and shows enough towns such as Szolnok for central reference points. Maproom (talk) 22:02, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
Maproom, that may help. let's see what Si Trew says. my main focus is turning map images into working location maps. I don't really have a strong feeling about the particular map image, so long as it is created with a well-defined projection. Frietjes (talk) 22:06, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
Just asking out of curiosity - how do you "turn a map image into a location map"? Do you warp it into the Mercator projection that the template requires? Or do you supply the template with a transform function? Maproom (talk) 07:24, 19 October 2016 (UTC)
Maproom, supply the transformation function. see, for example, module:Location map/data/Canada. if I know the functional form and a sufficient number of reference points, I can numerically solve for the coefficients. Frietjes (talk) 12:40, 19 October 2016 (UTC)
Thank you. It's reassuring to see that things are done in such a sensible and comprehensible way. Incidentally - if you ever find a map image at http://maproom.org/ that you could use in Wikipedia, please let me know and I'll put it on Commons. Maproom (talk) 09:46, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for pinging me in on this. I know it was a long time ago. User:Maproom, yes I did guess it was the Paris Meridian all that time ago, but that didn't seem quite to fit either. Since then I took something and with Inkscape made a four-colour map (five if you include Lake Balaton as a fifth colour, blue, but could have been made a fourth colour as those that surround it are all in three other colours, it is just more pleasant to have it in blue but not mathematically necessary) and split out all the layers and borders and so on into separate layers on the SVG. I seem to recall I called it Template:Location Map Hungary2 or something – and I emphasise this is not the Kingdom of Hungary but the modern-day Hungary. All I had left to do was get the text labelling right. Searching for "a new look for an old map" was something roughly want some commenter said, may well have been User:Frietjes here but may not have been (a long time ago, just going from memory: and those exact words are what was printed on the front of the first H C Beck fold-up London Underground Diagram (often called "Map"; Beck himself never called it a map: I have good references for this from publications of the London Transport Museum in woodware) of 1933, so I am probably confusing those words with the same sentiment expressed. This is all such a long time ago, I give as hints for those who can search better than I.
On the plus side, by pure coincidence (these are not common around here in Budapest) my local pub has a nice 1898ish German (I think) map of Austria-Hungary; certainly pre-Treaty of Trianon. This is a five or six colour map and I am pretty sure it is in German but I am going from memory, I don't think it's in Hungarian. It would be about 40 by 25 inches (1,020 mm × 640 mm) and I daresay somehow I could get it scanned in, in one of the largescale printers in the town (who I happen to be also on good terms with, for various other reasons) or just take four A3 scans and stitch them with photoshop, assuming that my scanner doesn't distort too much. I am on good terms with the landlord as I have given him my British registration plates and various other British pub memorablia, it is that kind of pub, very much a "local", so I can ask to borrow the map (it's framed) or just go in on a quiet afternoon with a straightedge etc and try to get some measures off that. I think it is not the same as the image is here, though quite similar. As a start shall I get the maker etc, would that help at all, before I do the trig etc off it? I have a very good straightedge and fifty quids worth of setsquare adjustable protractor that I use for technical drawing on my A0 drawing board, it's about 25 inches (640 mm) long on its hypotenuese, which should be enough to measure angles and distances with some kinda veracity, I am not sure of the projection without looking again. Is it worth me taking a look and reporting back, probably will be about UTC+2 Friday tomorrow, else Monday? If you give me some nice trig points "in the middle" I will do my best to give you the readings off of them. These won't be 100% accuracy but will be within a second of arc or two through the distortion of the glass in the frame, I would imagine. Si Trew (talk) 16:05, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
I understand if it is WP:COPYVIO etc but if I check the maker first, it may very well turn out not to be because of the date and also various other "things that have happened since", could well be PD or fair use. I think I check the maker first, that is clear enough in top right corner but don't remember offhand. Would that be of any use, at least to confirm or deny if it's the same as this one? It reminded me of this one, when I first saw it, but I think it is different but of about the same time. Si Trew (talk) 16:40, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
File:Hungary_location_map.svg is the one I made the four-colour svg version of. It just needs tidying on the text labels layer if I remember right, I can't remember its name. The computer it was on is long gone. File:Hungary location map2.svg? Something like that. We have File:Hungary location map-2.jpg on Commons, but that's not it, cos it's not four-colour and has labels in Cyrillic, is a jpg not an svg. Perhaps unfortunately it got deleted as unused. I'd need to ask an admin to dredge from about 2009 onwards. Users working on it would have been mostly me and perhaps occasionally the missus, no longer editing at popflock.com resource for many a year due to very harsh and undeserved comments after excellent translations of English articles about the Tudors into HU:WP (something she is an expert in, more than I know and I'm bloody English): Her username was/is User:Monkap. Si Trew (talk) 16:51, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
OK, the map you included wrongfooted me, this is exactly the map that is nominated (duh!) I was looking at the map you included on the right. No, don't give up on it, I'll try to fix it. It is nearly OK, all the coords and borders and counties etc are done on separate labels and I think it is much better than the boring brown map transcluded via {{Infobox Hungarian settlement}}. We just need to fix the edges and fix the text-label layer for some reason the font doesn't scale properly, I never did work out why, I shall try again. One reason to separate into different layers in a good GIS fashion is so that with a flick of the wrist one can turn off all the labels, turn off e.g. the county borders, make all the counties brown and just fill one particular county in a different colour (for Hungarian county articles) etc etc etc. I hand-edited the XML for the SVG to make it all nice, it's much much nicer than its predecessor for putting into a GIS etc because each county edge and county border and county name etc is labeleed in a very consistent fashion. The underlying SVG is File:Kingdom_of_Hungary_counties-2.svg. The polygons for the borders go actually in a kinda "cogwheel" order so that some going anticlockwise have their boundaries against the others going clockwise, rather in a toothed gearwheel manner, but that was just my pedantry; each county actually has its own borders as it did on the original, but on the original the borders for e.g Budapest to Pest County were a bit different from the borders of Pest County to Budapest, i.e. there was a gap or overlap, which now there is not in "my" version, they have all the coordinates bang on, as I did them all in hand in the XML not with some "snap it roughly to where it looks right" tool. All the bordering points have the same coords but the opposite directions (clockwise or widdershins) which helps the SVG polygon fill get it right without overlap or gap.
I think we should keep it and try to fix the labels and the "fix" coordinates for it. I suppose this was a labour of love but I think it does make it better than what is used in the infobox, it scales except for the text labels and the old one has errors in the border coords that leave gaps or overlaps, it just doesn't seem so at the scale used in infoboxes, as the rendering of the borders and the pushpins for the places are far larger than the errors, at even a large-screen resolution scale. If you blow it up and print it onto A0 (paper size) is is noticeable. Si Trew (talk) 17:05, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
The text labels are fine on my I think 1972 across screen in full view. When I made this I think I had a 1024x768 screen. It's when the labels are all squished they don't scale down properly, and get all scrunched up, I have never quite worked out why. There is a style that governs it, and I tried all sorts of things but none worked. Si Trew (talk) 21:04, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

I was wondering how many tables are possibly not using one of the deprecated sport templates, but a manual header which acts the same, so I've used hastemplate:"Tooltip" insource:/Goals against/ and it found 5,090 results. Probably not all are relevant, but it sure seems there are much more here. It's really a shame a bot can't use your code to help you out here. --Gonnym (talk) 14:51, 22 October 2019 (UTC)

Module request

Hi again. Is there a module for the footballers' club statistics table like here? Can you help to built it?--Teacher0691 (talk) 21:39, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

Teacher0691, I don't think there is. are those tables only used on the Turkish language WP? or, do you have an example of them in use on this WP? Frietjes (talk) 12:07, 31 October 2019 (UTC)
Sure here are examples: 1, 2, 3, 4.--Teacher0691 (talk) 20:38, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

Module:Chessboard

hi Frietjes.

i noticed your edit summary on your latest edit to this module ("should use templatestyles").

i happen to be the originator of this module, though i haven't done much with it for the last several years, and i doubt it resemble my original version.

however, i did do quite a lot of other stuff related to showing chess on popflock.com resource (both lua and JS), and i wanted to suggest that there should be a better and simpler way to do what this module does - a lot of it has to do, as your summary indicates, with the introduction of templatestyles.

the "idea", or the "right way" to do it is demonstrated in mw:Module:ChessBowserPrototype (credit for showing me the light to User:Fred Gandt). this is a prototype for a (hopefully) up and coming extension meant to show full chess games interactively. you can see the demo-of-the-prototype-of-the-extension in mw:User:/test.

this prototype contains, as a subset, everything module chessboard "done the right way" needs, and will show the chessboard even when JS is disabled, or the required JS module is not loaded (naturally, not the "interactive game" part). the extension will use php, but the prototype is mainly lua+css.

the templatestyle CSS is mw:Template:ChessBrowserProto/styles.css).

if you are interested, i'll be happy to discuss the details. the bottom line is that doing it this way leads to a significantly simpler module, and generates shorted, sweeter, cheaper and nicer html (e.g., no "img" elements so no [[File:this]] and [[File:that]]. as a free bonus, "reverse" (showing board from black POV) boils down to adding a single class to the wrapper div.

bottom line: following up on your comment will be significant improvement to the module, and to the html it squirts out. i will be very happy to discuss the details, help, or, if asked, even do some or most of the work. let me know if you's like to continue this discussion.

peace - (aka kipod) (talk) 00:42, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

Hello kipod; although I am pleased to have helped a little in guiding your continued development of an interactive chess display done the right way, I really wish you'd have been more open to discussing the right way while my enthusiasm for the code was alive. I won't dwell on the "coulda, shoulda, woulda" of the past, but you've mentioned and directly messaged me about this several times since, and I feel it's about time I responded. Unfortunately I don't have anything useful to contribute beyond the scraps of code I wrote before, which are still available and free to use, abuse or ignore. My efforts to discuss how the implementation should be developed were dashed and the idea of getting involved again makes me feel bad. I hope something good eventually surfaces on Wikipedia, and wish you the best, but please stop pinging me about it (unless it's something specifically about the code I wrote and my input is needed). Thanks. Fred Gandt · talk · contribs 07:25, 14 January 2020 (UTC)
Hi Fred, thanks for linking me to those scraps of code. I didn't know there was a library to make gifs on the fly, but that's a really interesting option to consider for readers without javascript! Sorry that you've moved on, but your legacy is appreciated. Let me know if your feelings ever change. -- Wug·a·po·des 23:33, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

Damallsvenskan seasons article changes

What was going on and what did you do on 2015 Damallsvenskan? I do not recall that the older revisions were such a mess with the league table and broken (?) templates.

And why did you remove the {{Football in Sweden}} template on all articles?

Would be nice if you left a little edit summary ;) Thank you for your hard work. --Mango från yttre rymden (talk) 13:29, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for your reply! I see. I'm not very initiated in the inner workings and developments of Wikipedia's technicalities, but from what I can gather, in layman's terms, an old sports table system was replaced with a new one. And when the old templates were deleted, the table vanished from the article and left lots of dead code in it.
You, on the other hand, seem very initiated in the matter, and as you also touched on 2020 Damallsvenskan I will take the opportunity to explain myself. I tried to combine all elements of a WDL table into one, using sports rbr table (I don't know how to link to it or even find it anymore), but it clearly isn't designed for that, so I had to haxx it together. I thought we could try that and see what people think, and if people are positive, some(one) could write some proper code for it. I forgot to mention it in the edit summary.
Why did you change the "style" parameter on the standings table from football to WDL? Is that what it's called now? It's a standings table, not a WDL table, very unintuitive and confusing.
I have a large draft on another computer with lots of pre-season info going into the overview section. New dates have recently been set. It will start at the end of June, so I will try to get it up by then. --Mango från yttre rymden (talk) 23:50, 12 June 2020 (UTC)
Mango från yttre rymden, the style template is Module:Sports table/WDL where WDL = "win draw loss" since not all football seasons have draws. there is also Module:Sports table/WL for football seasons without draws. if there is a problem with Module:Sports rbr table, let me know and I can work on it, but so far it seems to be working for 99.9% of all football articles which have round-by-round results tables. Frietjes (talk) 22:32, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
I see now about the style parameter.
I was using this example http://www.popflock.com/learn?s=Module:Sports_rbr_table#Example_3:_Team_combined_table but with all teams in the division in one single table, not just one team with the team name put in the table title like the example shows. The module clearly isn't really made for what I was doing in 2020 Damallsvenskan. It works, but I kinda had to duct tape it together with lots of label rows with a new number for each row, making it difficult to keep track of what value is for what team. Would be much easier if all values regarding one team had the same number. Like "Ground1" and "Position1" perhaps. Do you see what I'm going for? Could it be modified into what I would like to have it, or something like it? If you are a coder I'm sure you can come up with a good solution, but I'm not sure I have made myself apprehensible. The whole concept is quite ambitious from a user and article standpoint, but I thought it could be tried at least. Or do you think it's just stupid perhaps? --Mango från yttre rymden (talk) 14:28, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
we were working on something related here, where one could put the position/ground/result in one table and then select which to show. here, it sounds like you want to have all three show at the same time for all teams? I had stopped working on it because I thought no one was seriously interested. but, I could work on it some more if you are interested. Frietjes (talk) 14:34, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
"here, it sounds like you want to have all three show at the same time for all teams?" Exactly. It's just an idea on my end, I don't know if there's any interest. I was thinking that I would do it on 2020 Damallsvenskan either way, as a proof on concept, and get peoples opinion, and if people liked it, it could be pitched to someone working on that stuff (like you? :) ) to implement functions for it in the module properly. I could start with your opinion. Since you've already thought about it and perhaps worked a little bit on it, then I guess I'm not the only one thinking along those lines ;) The thing you discussed in "Consistent data" looks really cool, but that is more about logistics, having one template on multiple articles and thus lessen editing burden, as I understood it. --Mango från yttre rymden (talk) 20:20, 26 June 2020 (UTC) I also edited my previous message to make it more clear.

Edge case missed by findargdups

I found an edge case where a page contains duplicate arguments but findargdups can't find them. I created a minimal test case at [35]. It's admittedly rather pathological, since it depends on two separate mistakes, but I did first see it in the wild. Jackmcbarn (talk) 21:11, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

Jackmcbarn, thanks, the script doesn't fully understand how WP parses ref tags with unclosed braces and unclosed brackets. if I had some javascript that could convert a page into a nested parsing tree it would be much easier to isolate the offending parameters. I will see if I can do something here, but I am not sure if there is a simple solution. Frietjes (talk) 15:49, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
I wonder if feeding the page to Parsoid like WP:EPH does would help. It basically gives you the nested parsing tree, where the tree is a DOM tree. Jackmcbarn (talk) 21:40, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

school cat

Category:Pages using infobox school with deprecated parameters is now a redlink, but apparently still in use, e.g. Balmiki Education Foundation (using and ). This name is not really accurate I think because deprecated params go to Category:Pages using infobox school with unsupported parameters, but we still need this one too? Category:Pages using infobox university with conflicting parameters is also now red, and I don't see any recent changes to that template either. MB 23:03, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
MB, I changed the school one. apparently, Primefac is deleting these without changing the template code :( Frietjes (talk) 23:04, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
If this got mixed in with about 150 categories that were properly orphaned from the template (I d-batched the lot), then my apologies, I thought I had checked that they were all in the same group. Of course, I wouldn't expect a category marked as "not used by the template" to still be used by the template, but I can't guarantee that I'll always be able to dig through the template code to find out if a G8 is actually appropriate (and if I've deleted something in error, please let me know so I can restore it). Primefac (talk) 00:33, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
I recreated it. Frietjes (talk) 13:56, 24 September 2020 (UTC)

Old user pages

Hello, Frietjes,

It is really not necessary to go back to long-gone editors' user pages and delete them because they might contain content like a link to a Facebook account. NotAWebHost is meant to discourage current editors for using their user pages to hold inappropriate content like the Fantasy Football rankings or blog entries. But we don't need to mine old user pages to delete them just because of one external link, especially if the user is inactive. It just becomes busy work and doesn't really help the project in any way. Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 19:02, 24 September 2020 (UTC)

Liz, I am cleaning up Special:WantedTemplates which is currently limited to A-K because there are more then 5000. unfortunately, because it includes all namespaces, this means we are missing a lot of broken templates, typos, and other problems in article space. if we can cut down the number of entries on the list, we can have it cover all of article space, and ensure that we don't have problems persisting for years. however, if the project doesn't want to delete self-promotional userpages from users with no other edits outside of userspace, then I can just blank these pages instead. Whither the ARW Infobox montage?

I'm hoping that you can help create an Infobox collage or refer me to an editor who creates them here at Wikipedia.

The article is the American Revolutionary War article. My six-month colleague-partner upgrading the article in every respect, just had the following exchange at ARW 'Infobox image':

"Yes, image option B Washington Before Yorktown.jpg seems the best. I'm still of the opinion that the lede image should be one image, as large as is practically possible. Multiple images seem to diminish the other in the confines of an info-box, esp because they must be rendered smaller to fit in there. I placed all the optional images in a collapsible box to condense the section. Feel free to revert if you like." -- Gwillhickers (talk) 20:11, 27 September 2020 (UTC)
"The collapsible box is THE solution for discussion threat and access-to-images together. THANKS. I added an inline image of your proposal for clarity to a scanning visitor."
- "I get your collage point, to a point = too much is too small. But if we could get an assist on the set-up of a customized collage, a detail of each image might show larger, and so be satisfactory. So left-half-montage = ~left-half-Redoubt#10 EL Lami - Storming of redoubt 10 during the Siege of Yorktown (1840).jpg; upper-right-half-montage = right-2/3-Washington-Monmouth BattleofMonmouth.jpg; lower-right-half-montage = right-lower-1/3-Jones-Serapis The action between the Serapis, capt. Pearson, the Countess of Scarborough, and Paul Jones's Squadron. R.Paton - K325.jpg. Maybe we can get both 'readable' images and 'action scenes'. You can click on each thumbnail for and enlargement for better recall of what each composition contains." - TheVirginiaHistorian (talk) 23:34, 27 September 2020 (UTC)

I do understand that this is a big ask: at least six tasks: crop the three images, set up the collage template, juggle the pix-counts and proportions around to fit, recrop detail from images as required to fit. But the article is pretty high-traffic, and a good image would have a great impact to your credit. And, WAY OVER MY HEAD.

Both Gwillhickers and I believe the previous Infobox collage is objectionable on three counts. First, all four elements were used elsewhere in the article, deprecated by wp:image mos. Second, the images were too small for GW's liking. Third, especially for me, the top-most, prominent banner-image was a British surrender parade at Yorktown --- for the ARW article self-described in an article top-hat: This article is about military actions primarily." QED.

I AM THE PUPPY IN TALL GRASS. Any assistance or pointers would be greatly appreciated ... I can't even get a third image to appear in my trial montages at the ARW Talk page! - TheVirginiaHistorian (talk) 00:08, 28 September 2020 (UTC)

TheVirginiaHistorian, I agree that creating a single static image from the various components will load faster and less likely to have churn with people swapping out the images. I would ask at WP:Graphics Lab. someone there could do it pretty quickly, just give detailed instructions concerning which images and the layout. Frietjes (talk) 13:32, 28 September 2020 (UTC)

Template:Fb cl header

I saw and deleted the subpages you tagged. Is this main template ready to be deleted as well? Thanks! Plastikspork -OE(talk) 22:07, 30 September 2020 (UTC)

Plastikspork, let's wait a day or two to make sure no new uses pop up. but, after that, yes we can delete it! Frietjes (talk) 22:08, 30 September 2020 (UTC)
I'm trying to think of titles that will have a high probablity of having these tables. this gives 35 results but I'm sure there are more. --Gonnym (talk) 09:41, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
Gonnym, thank you, that's helpful. some are using "goal difference" instead of "goals difference" like this one. I tweaked your search to look for /Goals? difference[ ]*}/ and found 2306 results. if this template is deleted, we can create a list of pages to convert instead of marking them by changing the table header. Tennis template font color

Hi Frietjes, do you know how the font color in the bar of the {{Infobox GrandSlamTournamentsDisciplines}} can be changed to black at the List of Wimbledon ladies' singles champions article? Thx. --Wolbo (talk) 18:12, 6 October 2020 (UTC)

Wolbo, I updated the code to automatically select white or black font color using Template:Greater color contrast ratio. Frietjes (talk) 18:39, 11 October 2020 (UTC)
That's even better! Thanks again.--Wolbo (talk) 19:07, 11 October 2020 (UTC)
Could you please do the same update for {{Infobox GrandSlamTournaments}}? --Wolbo (talk) 20:21, 11 October 2020 (UTC)
Wolbo, okay done. I had to add a bias parameter to get Australian Open to use white text. it turns out that black has a higher contrast ratio than white, but it looks strange to have black text with the logo directly above. the most accessible thing to do would be to either (a) use black text and remove the bias parameter in the code, or (b) use a darker background which would also trigger white text. Frietjes (talk) 14:18, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, again. Your contributions to various tennis templates over time are much appreciated. BTW the Australian Open color was not the standard project color (#F9D251). Look fine now. --Wolbo (talk) 14:44, 12 October 2020 (UTC)

What is the source for Wadi al-Far'a = "Valley of the Branches"?

Hi. Please, indicate the source. We are not allowed to just claim such things without indicating the source. Thank you and keep up the good work, Arminden (talk) 14:22, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

Arminden, if you check this link you will see that all I did was change the article from using deleted {{Infobox Palestinian Authority muni}} to using {{infobox settlement}}. the questionable text was there before I made edits to the article. I just translated the parameters. Frietjes (talk) 18:47, 11 October 2020 (UTC)
Hi, and thanks. I see. I looked into the edit history when it first showed up, and wrote to the editor who made that edit - you. Or so I thought, although that hairpin arrow sign was confusing. Portal mobile view

Was looking at Portal:Cannabis/Major topics and noticed it works (is seen in mobile view). What parameter allows this?--Moxy ? 01:17, 11 October 2020 (UTC)

Moxy, not entirely sure, but I believe navboxes are excluded from mobile view in article space, but not in other namespaces. other than experimenting, you could try asking at WP:VPT or somewhere else. Frietjes (talk) 18:44, 11 October 2020 (UTC)
It's the "border" parameter. Seems like if no border they work in mobile view just like portals.--Moxy ? 20:37, 11 October 2020 (UTC)
Moxy, that's definitely a possible explanation. without the border, it may not add the outer navbox class which may be what triggers the exclusion. however, I recall that before even using the "navbox-title" class would cause cells to disappear on mobile, so there may have been some changes over the past several years. one thing you could do is use Special:ExpandTemplates and compare something that appears and something that doesn't appear and see which classes are different. Frietjes (talk) 13:49, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
That's quite interesting! Indeed seems like it's doing that, further looks like values of none/child/subgroup will all do that. I suppose it's breaking the collapsible/navbox code (Module:Navbox L409 onwards), so it bypasses the issue of T111565. ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 14:21, 12 October 2020 (UTC)

Question

Can you tell the purpose of Category:Pages using national squad without sport and with team link? What should be changed in a squad template for this category to disappear? --BlameRuiner (talk) 07:43, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

BlameRuiner, see Module talk:National squad. there was a proposal to no longer make sport=football the default, so I created tracking to show all the pages that might break if this was implemented. I believe that category wasn't the problematic one, but Category:Pages using national squad without sport or team link was a possible problem. I don't think you need to fix anything, since it was just for information purposes and it appears the request has been dropped for now. we could probably remove the tracking now. but, adding with an appropriate value would remove the template from the tracking category if you think that the sport should be explicitly specified. Frietjes (talk) 15:42, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
My question was due to the fact that one of these two categories flooded pretty much every international player's page (who has a tournament template at the bottom) and I wasn't quite sure what's wrong. I have hidden categories display enabled, and most of the time they suggest what wrong (some missing year or date, no player's position category, broken arguments in templates and so on), but here I wasn't quite sure, because the source code of the category itself wasn't helpful. --BlameRuiner (talk) 16:36, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
it was only added for that discussion and now removed. Frietjes (talk) 16:38, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

findargdups aliases

Hey Frietjes. Re User:Frietjes/findargdups. So currently Category:Pages using duplicate arguments in template calls (and I presume script also) is unable to handle aliases. An example is at {{Infobox station}} where has alias . A template using both won't show up in the global cat. This template specifically I added tracking for this using Category:Pages using Infobox station with duplicate parameters (it uses the templatedata). Curious if there'd be any interest in adding support to deal with alias dupes in User:Frietjes/findargdups? Thanks, ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 16:08, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

Actually, never mind me, brain isn't switched on yet. We already show the hatnote for the dupe (on preview), so it makes the point mostly moot I suppose, since this functionality can only be done with the module rather than by software. Guess I'd have to take my idea to phab if anywhere. ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 16:13, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
ProcrastinatingReader, in some templates like Infobox school we have Category:Pages using infobox school with unsupported parameters which is populated by Module:Check for clobbered parameters. it shows a warning message in preview if the template is using more than one of a redundant set of parameters as specified by the list in the code at the bottom of Template:Infobox school. to see an example, open one of the articles in Category:Pages using infobox school with unsupported parameters in edit preview mode. Module:Election results

Hello Frietjes. Sorry to bother you, but while I have been able to figure out how to make quite a lot of amendments to this module (I have been trying to avoid asking you for assistance as I appreciate I might have been asking a bit too often), one thing I cannot work out from the code is how to turn off the vote totalling in the total row when no votes figures are entered (for example in the table at 1978 Guatemalan general election#Congress. Is it possible to make the votes and % columns blank in the total row when there are no figures? Cheers, Number 57 20:07, 22 October 2020 (UTC)

Thanks! Would it also be possible to get rid of the dash in the percentage column too? No worries about overwriting my edits - I was just trying a couple of things to see if I had understood how the code works. Cheers, Number 57 15:18, 23 October 2020 (UTC)

Hoi!

Red Kitten 01.jpg

Hoi! :) Groeten!
