A demo wiki is up and running!

You can already now try out the demo for a genealogy wiki at https://tools.wmflabs.org/genealogyhttp://popflock.com/learn?s=Main_Page and try out the functions. You will find parts of the 18th Pharao dynasty and other records submitted by the 7 first users, and it would be great if you would add some records.

And with those great news we want to wish you a creative New Year 2019!

World Pride New York

Hey,

after a hiatus from Wiki events I wanted to set everything up for Wiki participation in World Pride New York 2019. I think I talked to you about this in Cape Town. For this I wanted to ask you whether you could again tell me the name of the hotel that WMNYC has already collaborated with? The human rights conference which will probably be the most interesting part for us would take place from 24th to 25th of June. The opening ceremony will be on the 26th and the final parade on the 30th.

So we would probably reserve places at the hotel from 24th to 30th of June for a group of let's say 7 people. Could you maybe get in contact with the hotel and tell me whether that would be possible? Just because they already know you it would probably make more sense. You can cc me: saskia.j.ehlers@gmail.com

Also as you're working at the MoMA I wanted to ask if it would be possible to have an editathon at MoMA specifically for LGBT content (and maybe they have an archive / material that we could also use). That would then probably be on the 27th, 28th and 29th of June.

Additionally if WMNYC is already in contact with LGBT organizations or has sponsors in general it would be great if I could get their contact to ask if they would sponsor the event (in terms of flight/ train costs for participants)- public transport, hotel and food would most likely be covered by a Foundation grant.

Best regards and a happy new year --Sparrow () ? 20:34, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

Aloha Pharos! We corresponded a few years ago, when I was helping to set up an edit-a-thon at WP:GLAM/Doris_Duke_Foundation_for_Islamic_Art. You helped connect us with User:TParis, whose guidance and expertise were invaluable. I'm planning another edit-a-thon, this time at the Honolulu Museum of Art: WP:GLAM/Honolulu_Museum_of_Art. It'll be on Friday, February 8, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm HST. We'll be expanding articles about Hawai'i artists and arts organizations using a newly digitized collection of museum newsletters, among other sources. Two local Wikipedians, User:wmpearl and User:Mcampany will be helping out during the event. Please join us if you can! AwedOakSun (talk) 01:11, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

Hello Pharos. I have noticed that you have not left any comments at your DYK nomination ever since the nomination date, which was back in January, and you have not edited the article at all since nominating it for DYK. This has been in spite of numerous talk page messages and pings. I am leaving you this message as currently there are some issues with the article that are preventing it from being approved for DYK. Pharos, please return to the nomination and leave a message with your thoughts, or please read the messages left at the nomination page and make adjustments to the article if necessary. As the nominator, your feedback and responses is very much appreciated by the DYK contributors. If you are too busy to participate further in the nomination, just leave a message either here or the nomination page, so that other editors can help out in your stead. Thank you and happy editing. DYK for Presidential campaign announcements in the United States

Updated DYK query.svgOn 17 March 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Presidential campaign announcements in the United States, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that a U.S. presidential candidate making a campaign announcement is said to "throw one's hat in the ring", after a boxing metaphor popularized by the Theodore Roosevelt 1912 presidential campaign? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Presidential campaign announcements in the United States), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Thursday April 4 and Friday April 5: Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College
LaGuardia CC E jeh.jpg

Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College is hosting the second annual popflock.com resource Translatathon! At this event on Thursday evening and during the day Friday this week, anyone from the public is invited to LaGuardia to join students, professors, and CUNY faculty in translating popflock.com resource articles among any languages which attendees understand. Themes for this event include public health and the history of New York City.

New York City has a large immigrant population and great diversity of speakers of various languages. Among all schools in New York City, LaGuardia has the highest percentage of immigrant students, the highest percentage of students who speak a language other than English as their first language, and the greatest representation of language diversity. It is a strength of LaGuardia that it can present "Wikipedia translatathons", which are popflock.com resource translation events.

ArbCom 2019 special circular

Administrators must secure their accounts

The Arbitration Committee may require a new RfA if your account is compromised.

This message was sent to all administrators following a recent motion. Thank you for your attention. For the Arbitration Committee, Cameron11598 02:48, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security -- that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The 'Chances' for Peace

Hey- I was looking at the Chance for Peace speech transcript on Wikisource and I realized- the Eisenhower library transcript is likely a flawed or "grammatically rectified" clean-up of the real speech. There's a whole preamble to the speech that isn't included. I'm only one sentence in, and there are two or three minor differences from what I'm hearing to what's in the transcript. I recommend giving a literal transcription of the words he used, and adding the grammatical differences in brackets if they are necessary and proper. I will do this later, but I invite you to give me your advice and join in on the editing (or do it yourself if you want to). http://www.popflock.com/video?id=Or9I-qElmCY https://www.eisenhower.archives.gov/all_about_ike/speeches/chance_for_peace.pdf http://www.popflock.com/source?s=The_Chance_for_Peace Geographyinitiative (talk) 04:05, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

Indefinite blocking of IP addresses

Hi Pharos! I hope you're having a great day and that life is treating you well. :-) I'm messaging you because it came to my attention that you blocked IP user 2600:1017:B80F:B7C3:B04B:1068:F2AA:8247 indefinitely. I'm not sure if you did this on accident or not, but I wanted to bring it up to you informally anyways. :-) While the block was certainly justified due to the user's repeated threats and disruption, an indefinite block definitely wasn't. This IP address is allocated to Verizon, a mobile network carrier in the United States. This means that IP addresses will frequently change hands as devices connect and disconnect from their data network and travel from node-to-node, or tower-to-tower. The indefinite block, given its allocation and the fact that it will frequently be handed out to different users over the span of just hours means that it will cause much more harm than good by affecting innocent users who happen to be given that IP address next. There are circumstances that have called for indefinite IP address blocks in the past, but these situations are extremely rare occurrences. I've run into IP users who have needed an indefinite block maybe twice while I've been an admin... so, definitely not a common thing. ;-) Anyways, I just wanted to give you a heads up; the indefinite block has already been fixed by another admin - so no harm done. ;-) If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let me know and I'll be happy to discuss them with you and help. I hope you have a great weekend and I wish you happy editing. :-D Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:59, 11 May 2019 (UTC)

How do I pay dues so I can vote for the Board?

I sent this message to Megs: "Could you post the link where I can pay the $5 dues to be eligible to vote 9/25? Thanks. Vyeh (talk) 20:00, 16 September 2019 (UTC)" I haven't received a reply. When I first saw the agenda, there was a board election on it. Now there isn't. When is the board election? BTW, I'm not interested. I'd be very happy if the current board was for life. Vyeh (talk) 15:23, 24 September 2019 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Hi Vyeh. You can do that online on the Wikimedia NYC website, but we've also typically taken dues on the day of the election. (i.e. online is preferred, but if someone forgets to sign up online, you can just bring $5 to the meeting). — Rhododendrites talk \\ 18:05, 24 September 2019 (UTC)

Substantial removals of my edits

Sir, in rescinding my color-coded population charts en masse, you've also removed countless other contributions that were related to population figures that were not a part of the objected-to chart. I would appreciate their restorations, because this is a gargantuan waste of my valuable time having to revisit every single page to see what's missing.DJ Jones74 (talk) 15:29, 10 December 2019 (UTC)

Updated DYK query.svgOn 16 December 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Concert Grove, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Concert Grove in New York City's Prospect Park is used as a sculpture garden because its acoustics turned out to be bad for musical performances? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Concert Grove. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Concert Grove), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Met photos

Hi Pharos, sorry for asking again, but I forgot: Itti asked me to help her transfer this photo from the Met website to commons. There is no "OA" mark next to the photo. Does this mean that we can't transfer it? Thanks, --Gnom (talk) 11:27, 30 December 2019 (UTC)

1632 Rembrandt in Allentown, Pennsylvania

Pharos,

You're the closest person I know to being an expert who would know anything about this. The Allentown Art Museum has discovered in its Samuel H. Kress collection a 1632 Portrait of a Young Woman, Rembrandt van Rijn. Actually it was originally attributed by Kress as a Rembrandt about 1961, but then downgraded to "workshop of", and now after restoration by NYU, again attributed to Rembrandt.

Ref AP . See also Portrait of a Young Woman (Rembrandt). I was going to add the Allentown pic in there but, probably not yet.

Looks like a pattern to me. I'll check this out further and will decide if there's anything to do about it. Smallbones(smalltalk) 16:23, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

Smithsonian and CNN answered most of my questions. Yes same model sat for several paintings and she has historically been labeled as his sister. Smallbones(smalltalk) 18:08, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

Paradisus Judaeorum GA?

I think it's about to pass, good news. Slightly less so is that it now has a gibberish poem translation, I am wondering if you'd like to copyedit it a bit or such. The translation, I mean. Don't look at me, I told the GA reviewer it's not a good idea, but they think it is better than nothing. Errr. Ok. 100th popflock.com resource Weekly Youtube Subscriber Stub

Hey, Safwan Morshed here. First of all, didn't know popflock.com resource Weekly existed till my brother told me about it a couple days ago, and it looks pretty cool. Anyways, regarding the 100th sub stub, a youtuber widely known as Markiplier had started a channel called Unus Annus (latin for "one year") which is a channel which would be deleted after said timeframe from the date of its creation. He had worked with his friend Ethan Nestor on this channel, and they publish videos daily. In one of their daily videos, in which they had to be physically separated during this unfortunate situation, they decided they would do a popflock.com resource race, that is, open 2 random articles and start from one and race to the other by clicking each link included or related to the article and its resulting articles. Well, at the end of the video, they found that all mentions of Ethan on popflock.com resource were all under Mark's popflock.com resource page. I thought it'd be neat if Ethan had his own stub article. Thanks, and keep up the neat stuff! Safan41 (talk) 20:11, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
