The music video for Fast and Far was essentially a 12 hour endeavor. We had no budget and no time. Sebastian (vocals/violin/bells) was leaving for an extended stay in Russia in a matter of days. We wanted to have something to release to our fans in the time that he'd be gone.
There were eight of us. The six band members of Shrink the Giant, our manager, and our photographer/videographer... We had been up until 4:00 AM the previous night recording our acoustic Motorhome sessions. We were exhausted. We dragged ourselves out of bed, dragged our equipment into the woods, and plugged into nature. The only idea we were going off of was a joke we made in our indiegogo campaign video...poking fun at music videos that are filmed in nature, but the amps aren't plugged into anything. So we made some "outlets" and started filming.
We just played it by ear. There was no plan, except to showcase the band. Our other music videos ("Everything About Me" and "Gold") were so meticulously crafted; we weren't used to this "play it by ear" model. But the carefree, improvised method made for something very fun and very true to the personality of Shrink the Giant. We are a pretty goofy group of people. We have fun together. We love each other.
After all was said and done, we needed to figure out what to do with the footage. Stefania, our singer, usually edits our videos, but she was still in the midst of recovering from a head injury sustained in a car accident...long hours staring at a computer screen were out of the question for her. Our keyboardist, Jean-Christian, stepped up. He toiled over our footage to come up with a story - something that made sense and looked nice.
This is the final result! It's not posh or polished. A record label probably wouldn't have approved this. But it very accurately captures our demeanor and playfulness, and the DIY aspect is maybe even a little charming? Real?
Whatever the case, we're very grateful for our fans, and the fact that we have people to share our creations with.
