He was going to learn woodblock print from a Japanese master in Kyoto but at that time, Japanese masters couldn't have foreign students in their house. David Stones started learning woodblock print by himself, reading books which is translated into English and created woodblock artworks in his own way.
His Japanese woodblock master couldn't welcome him in his house. But he welcomed David to teach his method. David was an English teacher at that time and lived in Nagoya. So he had only weekends off. But he wanted to learn from the master so he took a bus from Nagoya to Kyoto and saw the Japanese master and brought his artworks to Kyoto to show them to the master.
