Gigi Fernández and Natasha Zvereva were the four-time defending champions, but were defeated in the final by Lindsay Davenport and Mary Joe Fernández 2-6, 1-6. This was Davenport's first ever Grand Slam title; she would go on to win a further two Grand Slams in doubles, and three Grand Slams in singles, eventually becoming the No. 1 in both disciplines.
