Gigi Fernández and Natasha Zvereva were the defending champions, but were defeated in the final by Lindsay Davenport and Jana Novotná with a score of 6-3, 6-4.

It was the 17th doubles title, 2nd Grand Slam for Davenport and the 67th title, 9th Grand Slam for Novotná, in their respective careers.

This was the first Grand Slam in which sisters Venus and Serena Williams competed, losing in the first round.
