Pete Sampras was the defending champion, but lost in the semifinals to Àlex Corretja.

Àlex Corretja won in the final 3-6, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-5, against Carlos Moyá in a repeat of that year's French Open final. In doing so, he became the first player to win the season-ending finals without previously winning a Grand Slam title in their career, a feat since achieved a further five times.
